Chapter Eleven

Silvano Grimandi had walked more than a mile down the main road in the direction of Monmouth before he attempted to hail a lift. He had intended to call a taxi by telephone — but not through the hotel switchboard. He had remembered seeing a telephone box at the road junction, but when he reached it he found it was out of order. He had no idea about the frequency of pay phones on English country roads, but, after walking for twenty minutes without seeing another, concluded they didn’t happen like milestones. He had tripped over the second milestone.

He was fit enough to walk all night, if necessary, even carrying his case, which wasn’t heavy. He had avoided thumbing a lift to this point, in case he was picked up by someone connected with the hotel. He didn’t want anyone to learn he had left — not till he was out of the country.

His plan was to pick up the rented car from where he had left it with Mr R. Jones on the outskirts of Monmouth. The car was ready. There had been a message that Mr Jones intended driving it over in the morning. Once he had his own transport again, Silvano was going straight to the airport and catching the first plane available to New York. He wasn’t sure whether his special price return ticket was transferrable: if it wasn’t he would gladly pay for a new ticket, just so he could get out of the country quickly.

What else could he do, he kept asking himself? There was no going back — he had to get out. He waved at a second car: like the first, it didn’t stop nor even slow. Maybe people didn’t give lifts to strangers in this country on deserted roads after midnight: so who could blame them? He wouldn’t have picked up someone escaping from the police. Except he didn’t look like someone the police would be after: in the daylight that would work for him. Maybe he should find shelter of some kind and sleep for a while — till dawn? Again he worked out how long it had taken to drive from the airport and decided he couldn’t afford the time to sleep.

People might start wondering where he was around nine, maybe ten in the morning. Would Mark Treasure bring him his toupee before then? It had given him away once: now it might do it again. It would never have blown off: the top of the turret window had brushed it off as he’d brought his head in. Then he remembered he’d promised to take a walk with Gino and Teresa at ten-thirty. Probably he had till then before anyone found his belongings had gone. He could be airborne by ten-thirty, beyond the reach of the British authorities.

He was a first generation, legal US citizen. So he wasn’t qualified to be President, but he didn’t believe he could be extradited either. He wasn’t absolutely sure on the last
